Re-purposed, Re-imagined Industrial Design. ​
Brighten Blue is an Industrial Design and pre-vocational training program offered to young adults (18+) with developmental disabilities, aiming to foster cultural, social and labor inclusion. Creatives and Collaborators participating in the program, learn how to bring back light to old lamps, as they fuse together lamp shades, cords, poles and many other different parts of disposed lamps to build one unique, luminous piece of art.


​Our Methodology and Curriculum

​01

Mingle Bazaar  (2 hours, Group Setting) 
​A gathering session for aZul to greet and meet Creatives and Collaborators. The C² Team get to spend time together and learn about aZul activities. During the Mingle Bazaar the C² Team participates in social and motor skills activities used to identify the abilities and strengths for the C² team, as well as their sensory preferences.
The motor skill activities include: 

  • Exposure to different tools
  • ​Working with cords
  • Fine motor activities: filling balloons with beans, setting up lase in the shoes, manipulating sandpaper, screwing in and screwing down with hands and with tools, usage of regular scissors, battle opening skills

 Phase I
(3 1/2 hour sessions, 12 weeks)

 Industrial Design Techniques Training
The C²Team learns 3 different type of lamp assemblies, along with the basics of electricity as a life skill.

Phase II
(4 hour sessions, 4 sessions)

Branding
In one on one workshops personalized to each C² Team, branding concepts are introduced. Tailored for each team's self expression and artistic portfolio.​

Phase III
(4 sessions)
Artistic Entrepreneurship
aZul connects the C² Team with local galleries, art fairs, and businesses to showcase and market their brand. Social skills are reinforced in a supportive business setting to develop the skill set for successful self-employment.​
